Transportation is a non-separable part of every society. It is an important component of the economy and a common tool for development. This is even more so in the global economy, where economic opportunities have increasingly been related to the mobility of people, goods, and information. There is a relation between the quantity and quality of transport infrastructure and the level of economic development. When there is a high level of transport infrastructure, economic development is apparent. Thus, when transport systems are efficient, they provide economic and social opportunities and benefits that result in positive multiplier effects such as better accessibility to markets, jobs, and additional investments.
In this regard, the Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Transport, intends to undertake feasibility studies for the development of Coastal Water Transport Services along Ghana's Coastline.
This is in line with Theme 3 (Sustainable transport) and Theme 5 (integrate and harmonize transport planning) of the National Transport Policy, with its policy objectives to establish Mass Transportation systems in urban areas with inter-modal facilities and interchanges, as well as developing a more extensive public transport system to help alleviate congestion in urban areas.
